What predicts long-term academic career success?
In a new study published in the Journal of Business and Psychology, we linked personality traits measured during doctoral training to research performance 12 years later.
Three traits stood out:
• Achievement striving – strong research drive
• Extraversion – networking and collaboration
• Emotional stability – resilience after setbacks
Together these traits support both activity (starting projects, collaborations, publications) and resilience (persisting despite rejection and uncertainty).
The study builds on research using the PhD Personality Questionnaire (PPQ).
